Four things
I got tagged. Can’t fight it…
Four jobs I’ve had:
- Stock clerk/bag boy/cashier. This was at the family business, a chain of supermarkets in downtown Indianapolis. I had to work Saturdays my junior year of high school in order to earn enough money to buy a car (the money and car were both coming from my grandparents, so mostly it was a lesson in responsibility). All things considered, it wasn’t a bad job, and I enjoyed working with the guys down in the stock room, who’d all try to teach me about life and girls. My favorite task was easily working the incinerator, where I actually got paid to burn shit.
- Camp counselor. Technically, I was a counselor’s assistant. I would have made counselor the next year, but I left that summer in a huff after a disagreement with the camp director, and refused to come back. My job here mainly consisted of assisting in managing a bunk of boys (including Kurt Russell’s son Boston) and teaching some computer classes. Camp summers were the best summers of my life, and not merely for the self-rigteousness and awkward introductions to the hanky panky.
- Movie extra. On a lark, I sent in a head shot to the casting directors of Road to Perdition. They were looking for thousands of Irish looking men and women, so I thought the chances of a scrawny Eastern-European Jew getting picked were pretty slim. Much to the dismay of my two very Irish-looking co-workers at the time, I got the call. It was a day’s work, and well worth the time, despite having to get up at 3:30 am, stand in the sub-freezing weather for hours, and ultimately getting cut from the film. I got called back for a second day later in the shoot, and this time I got to sit in the front pew while Paul Newman took communion. This also got cut, but I brought my friends Colleen and Colleen with me, which ultimately allowed us to make this.
- SAT and academic tutor. I only tought math. As far as I know, every kid I tutored saw their math scores go up. No word on what happened to their verbal.
