Chapatis on the rise

Indian food was on the menu again last night, and this time I didn’t squander the opportunity to capture the miracle of the chapati-making process.

A beautiful example of a chapati poofing up on the open flame:

The chapati begins to poof up

A hilarious example of what happens when you’re too busy taking pictures of the open flame to pay attention to the food on top of it:

Chapati on fire

If you ever get burnt chapatis served to you in an Indian restaurant, now you’ll know why. It’s not there for texture, or aesthetic value—it’s because the cooks got so giggly at the sight of the bread ballooning up that they forgot to watch what they were doing.
